How to reply on X so it actually grows your account

Replies are where new people find you on X. A good one puts your name in front of an audience that’s already interested. A careless one, repeated, makes you look like a bot. Here’s the difference.

Why replies matter more than posts at first

With few followers, your posts reach few people. A reply to a bigger account in your field is shown to the people reading that account, and that’s the audience you want. X says that when it ranks replies, it considers whether the original author replied, whether the reply comes from someone the reader follows, and whether the replier subscribes to Premium.

The ranking code puts the same thing in numbers. In the version X published in 2023, a reply was weighted 13.5 against a like’s 0.5 when scoring a post, so one reply counted as much as 27 likes, and a reply the author then engaged with was weighted 75. The current code, rewritten in 2026, weights a reply at 5 and adds an extra 15 for replies between people who follow each other. The numbers change. The direction stays the same: conversation counts for far more than likes.

Which posts to reply to

  • Accounts a few steps ahead of you, in the topic you want to be known for. A reply to an account with ten times your followers gets seen. A reply to one with ten thousand times your followers gets buried under hundreds of others.
  • Early. The first replies to a post are the ones people read. An hour later, yours is one of two hundred.
  • Where you know something. If all you can add is agreement, a like does the job and costs you nothing.
  • People who reply back. A conversation with the author is worth more than any single reply, both to the ranking and to you.

What a good reply does

It adds one thing the post didn’t have. That could be:

  • a detail from your own experience (“we tried this, it halved our churn for two months and then stopped working”);
  • a counterexample, stated plainly and without a lecture;
  • the follow-up question the post raises, the one other readers are wondering about too;
  • a joke that lands, often the shortest and best reply of all.

Keep it shorter than the post. Write it the way you’d answer out loud. And reply to what was said, rather than to the general topic. A reply that could sit under any post on the subject is noise.

Replies that read as spam

People skim past a certain kind of reply in a fraction of a second. It opens with praise (“Great point!”), restates the post, adds a tidy lesson and ends with a question nobody asked. Each part is a pattern, and together they make the exact shape generic AI replies come in. You can test any reply for these patterns with the free AI writing checker.

Avoid these too:

  • replying with a link to your own thing when nobody asked;
  • the same reply under several posts;
  • emoji-only replies, which give no one anything to answer;
  • dozens of replies in a short burst. X’s authenticity policy bans bulk, aggressive, high-volume unsolicited replies, and replies that have nothing to do with the original post.

AI replies and X’s rules

X’s automation rules are direct about automated replying. Sending automated replies based on keyword searches isn’t permitted, and running an AI reply bot requires X’s written approval in advance. In July 2026, X said it had removed 42,000 accounts that were automating replies with chatbots, because there was no human in the loop.

Using AI to help you write is different from letting it reply for you. The line is whether a person reads each reply and decides to send it. That’s how PostInk’s AI reply generator works. It drafts a reply in X’s reply box, in your voice, and you read it and press Reply yourself. Its reply panel also caps how many replies you can approve in a day and spaces them out, so even a busy afternoon keeps a human pace.

A routine that works

  1. Make a list of 20 to 30 accounts a few steps ahead of you in your topic.
  2. Twice a day, spend fifteen minutes on their new posts.
  3. Reply to the three or four where you have something real to add.
  4. When someone replies to you, answer. That conversation is the point.

Keep this up for a month, and it will do more for a small account than any amount of posting into the void.
