Tweet character counter

Counts your post the way X does: links as 23, emoji as 2, against the 280 limit. If it runs long, it becomes a thread you can copy post by post.

How X counts characters

X doesn’t count every character as one. It weighs them, so a post can be shorter or longer than it looks.

Character limits on X

A post on X can be 280 characters. With X Premium, you can post up to 25,000. The feed shows only the start and folds the rest behind “Show more”, so the first 280 still do the work.

If your idea needs more room than one post, a thread usually reads better than a long post. Each post gets its own line break in the feed and its own chance to be quoted. The counter above splits long text at paragraph and sentence breaks, so no post ends mid-thought. PostInk’s thread generator writes threads that way from the start.

Questions

What is the character limit on X?

A post can be 280 characters. With X Premium, you can write longer posts, up to 25,000 characters. Only the first 280 or so show in the feed before “Show more”.

Why does X count my post differently from my word processor?

X weighs characters. Every link counts as 23, however long it is. An emoji counts as 2, and characters from Chinese, Japanese, Korean and some other scripts count as 2 each. A word processor counts every character as 1.

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Yes. Each space and each line break counts as one character.

Do @mentions count toward the limit?

Mentions you type into the text count like any other characters. The handles X adds automatically at the start of a reply don’t.

Is what I type here saved?

No. The counter runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
