When to use it
Use it for one line that has to stop the scroll, like the first line of a launch post or a warning in a thread. It is too strong for anything longer.
Pairing it with plain text is what makes it work. A bold italic opener over a calm, ordinary paragraph looks deliberate; a whole post in it looks like an ad.
Bold italic sans has the most weight and stays easy to read. Serif bold italic looks old-fashioned, which can be the point for a quote or a book title.
What styled text costs on X
These are not fonts in the usual sense. They are different characters that happen to look like styled letters, and X treats them that way.
| Where | Works | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Posts and replies | Yes | Each styled letter counts as 2 of your 280, so keep it to a line. |
| Display name | Yes | 50 characters at most, and styled letters use them twice as fast. |
| Bio | Yes | 160 characters. A styled job title or one styled word is plenty. |
| @handle | No | Handles only take plain letters, numbers and underscores. |
| Hashtags | No | A styled hashtag is not a hashtag. X won’t link it or count it. |
| Search | Poorly | Search looks for plain letters, so styled words are hard to find. |
The bigger cost is reading. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them out one by one, as in “mathematical bold capital H”. A styled word is fine. A styled post shuts out the people who listen to X rather than read it, and many people do. Keep the important part in plain text and use styles for decoration around it.
For the same reason, don’t put the point of a post in styled text. If the post only works when people can read the styled line, it doesn’t work for everyone. To see how much of the limit a whole post uses, paste it into the tweet character counter.
Questions
Is bold italic the same as bold plus italic?
It is its own Unicode alphabet, not two effects stacked. That’s why it can be pasted anywhere as plain text.
Will bold italic text show on every phone?
Nearly all current phones and computers have fonts for it. Very old devices may show empty boxes instead, which is one more reason to keep styled text short.
How many characters does bold italic use on X?
Each letter counts as two of your 280. Spaces and punctuation stay plain and count as one.
