When to use it

It is a joke format, and it works for one: the reply to someone whose week went sideways, the “my plans this week” post, the sign-off on April Fools’ Day.

It is unreadable at a glance, which is the point, so keep it to a single line people can decode in a second.

Not every character has an upside-down twin. Letters with accents and some symbols stay as they are.

What styled text costs on X

These are not fonts in the usual sense. They are different characters that happen to look like styled letters, and X treats them that way.

WhereWorksWhat to know
Posts and repliesYesEach styled letter counts as 2 of your 280, so keep it to a line.
Display nameYes50 characters at most, and styled letters use them twice as fast.
BioYes160 characters. A styled job title or one styled word is plenty.
@handleNoHandles only take plain letters, numbers and underscores.
HashtagsNoA styled hashtag is not a hashtag. X won’t link it or count it.
SearchPoorlySearch looks for plain letters, so styled words are hard to find.

The bigger cost is reading. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them out one by one, as in “mathematical bold capital H”. A styled word is fine. A styled post shuts out the people who listen to X rather than read it, and many people do. Keep the important part in plain text and use styles for decoration around it.

For the same reason, don’t put the point of a post in styled text. If the post only works when people can read the styled line, it doesn’t work for everyone. To see how much of the limit a whole post uses, paste it into the tweet character counter.

Questions

How does upside down text work?

Each letter is swapped for a character that looks like it turned over, often from phonetic or maths alphabets, and the order is reversed so the line reads correctly when flipped.

Does upside down text work in my X name?

Yes, display names accept it. It makes your name very hard to search for, though.

Why do some letters look slightly off?

A few letters have no exact upside-down twin in Unicode, so the closest shape is used.
