When to use it

It looks technical and clean, which suits dev, data and product accounts: a project name, a version number, a short section label in a long post.

It also has digits, so it works for counters like a week or day number in a build log.

Some capitals (C, H, N, P, Q, R, Z) are older characters and can look heavier than the rest in some fonts.

What styled text costs on X

These are not fonts in the usual sense. They are different characters that happen to look like styled letters, and X treats them that way.

WhereWorksWhat to know
Posts and repliesYesEach styled letter counts as 2 of your 280, so keep it to a line.
Display nameYes50 characters at most, and styled letters use them twice as fast.
BioYes160 characters. A styled job title or one styled word is plenty.
@handleNoHandles only take plain letters, numbers and underscores.
HashtagsNoA styled hashtag is not a hashtag. X wonโ€™t link it or count it.
SearchPoorlySearch looks for plain letters, so styled words are hard to find.

The bigger cost is reading. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them out one by one, as in โ€œmathematical bold capital Hโ€. A styled word is fine. A styled post shuts out the people who listen to X rather than read it, and many people do. Keep the important part in plain text and use styles for decoration around it.

For the same reason, donโ€™t put the point of a post in styled text. If the post only works when people can read the styled line, it doesnโ€™t work for everyone. To see how much of the limit a whole post uses, paste it into the tweet character counter.

Questions

What does double-struck mean?

It is the style of letters drawn with a doubled stroke, sometimes called blackboard bold. โ„ for real numbers is the best-known example.

Does double-struck text include numbers?

Yes, all ten digits have double-struck forms, unlike italic and cursive.

Will it look the same on every phone?

Close, but not exactly. Each device draws these characters with its own font, so the weight of the outline varies.
