X username generator
Type your name and a word or two about what you do. You get handles that follow X’s rules, shortest and most natural first, each with a link to check whether it’s taken.

X’s rules for usernames
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Length | 4 to 15 characters. Shorter handles are almost all taken. |
| Characters | Letters A–Z, numbers and underscores. No spaces, dots, dashes or accents. |
| Banned words | Handles can’t contain “Twitter” or “Admin”. |
| Case | Not case-sensitive: @MayaOkafor and @mayaokafor are the same account. Capitals only change how it’s shown. |
| Changing it | You can change your handle in settings at any time. Links to your old handle stop working, and someone else can take it. |
Picking one that lasts
Your handle outlives most of what you’ll post about. A name tied to a job title, a product or a year ages badly: @mayadesigns2026 needs changing the day you stop designing or the year ends. Your own name, or your name plus a word that will stay true, lasts.
Say it out loud before you take it. If someone has to ask “with an underscore?” or “two Ls?”, they will mistype it when they mention you. Underscores and numbers are fine when they’re the only way to get your name; avoid them when they’re just there to be different.
Then set up the rest of the profile to match: a bio that says what you post about, and a display name people recognise.
Questions
How do I check if an X username is available?
Open x.com/ followed by the handle. If X says the account doesn’t exist, the handle is probably free; the definitive test is trying it in Settings, under Your account, Account information, Username. Suspended and deactivated accounts can hold a handle that looks free.
What makes a good X username?
Your real name if you can get it, since people search for it and it stays right if your work changes. If it’s taken, add a short word about what you do rather than random numbers.
Should my handle and display name match?
Ideally, or close to it. The display name can be longer and change often; the handle is what people type to mention you, so it should be easy to spell from memory.
Is anything I type sent to X?
No. The handles are built in your browser. Only the Check link opens x.com, and only when you click it.
