When to use it
Bold works best as a label, not a paragraph. One bold line at the top of a long post, the name of each step in a how-to, or the word you would stress out loud. Readers scan for it, so it only works if there is little of it.
In a display name, a bold word can mark what you do next to your name. Keep the name itself plain, so people can still find you by searching for it.
Bold sans reads most like normal X text, so it is the safe pick. Bold serif looks more formal and can feel like a heading from a document.
What styled text costs on X
These are not fonts in the usual sense. They are different characters that happen to look like styled letters, and X treats them that way.

The bigger cost is reading. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them out one by one, as in โmathematical bold capital Hโ. A styled word is fine. A styled post shuts out the people who listen to X rather than read it, and many people do. Keep the important part in plain text and use styles for decoration around it.
