When to use it
The classic use is the joke: the honest word crossed out and the polite one written after it, so readers see both. It is one of the few styles that adds meaning, not just looks.
It also shows a change plainly: an old price next to the new one, a date that moved, a plan you dropped. Crossing out says what changed without a paragraph explaining it.
The line is a separate character after each letter, so a struck-out word uses twice the characters. On a few older Android fonts the line can sit slightly off-centre.
What styled text costs on X
These are not fonts in the usual sense. They are different characters that happen to look like styled letters, and X treats them that way.
| Where | Works | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Posts and replies | Yes | Each styled letter counts as 2 of your 280, so keep it to a line. |
| Display name | Yes | 50 characters at most, and styled letters use them twice as fast. |
| Bio | Yes | 160 characters. A styled job title or one styled word is plenty. |
| @handle | No | Handles only take plain letters, numbers and underscores. |
| Hashtags | No | A styled hashtag is not a hashtag. X won’t link it or count it. |
| Search | Poorly | Search looks for plain letters, so styled words are hard to find. |
The bigger cost is reading. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them out one by one, as in “mathematical bold capital H”. A styled word is fine. A styled post shuts out the people who listen to X rather than read it, and many people do. Keep the important part in plain text and use styles for decoration around it.
For the same reason, don’t put the point of a post in styled text. If the post only works when people can read the styled line, it doesn’t work for everyone. To see how much of the limit a whole post uses, paste it into the tweet character counter.
Questions
How do you cross out text on X?
Type the words above, copy the strikethrough version and paste it into your post. X has no strikethrough button, but this text keeps the line wherever it’s pasted.
Why does strikethrough text use so many characters?
Each letter is followed by an invisible combining stroke, and X counts that stroke as a character. Five struck-out letters use ten.
Can I strike out just one word?
Yes. Type only that word, copy it, and paste it into the middle of your post.
