What styled text costs on X
These are not fonts in the usual sense. They are different characters that happen to look like styled letters, and X treats them that way.

The bigger cost is reading. Screen readers either skip these characters or read them out one by one, as in โmathematical bold capital Hโ. A styled word is fine. A styled post shuts out the people who listen to X rather than read it, and many people do. Keep the important part in plain text and use styles for decoration around it.

Can you change the font on X?
Not the font itself. X shows every post in its own typeface. What you can do is use Unicode characters that look like bold, italic, cursive or other letters. They paste into X as ordinary text and show up the same for everyone.
Is it safe to use these fonts on X?
Yes. Theyโre standard Unicode characters, not code, and X allows them in posts, names and bios. The catch is readability: screen readers and X search handle them poorly, so use them for a word or a line, not a whole post.
Why does styled text use more of my 280 characters?
X counts most of these characters as two each, the way it counts Chinese or Japanese text. Strikethrough and underline add a second, invisible character after each letter. Each style above shows its real count.
Is the text I type sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
Why do I see empty boxes instead of letters?
Your device has no font for those characters. Recent phones and computers cover all the styles here; older ones may not, which is another reason to keep styled text short.
